In a biography of Eugene Debs, the author describes a meeting in which Debs is speaking. The intensity of the crowd was incredible. And yet, many of those attending didn't speak English and couldn't therefore understand the content of Debs' speech. As one observer put it, "It was not so much that they cared for what he said, but that they cared that he cared for them..."
When asked how they could be so enthusiastic if they couldn't understand Debs, one person in the audience responded simply: "Debs talks to us with his hands, with his heart, and we all understood everything he said."
Obama is smart and progressive in what he says, for sure, but it's his heart that draws these crowds.
